The Biggest Mistake You are Making With Your To-Do List

To Do List Mistakes

To Do List Mistakes

To-do lists are important.

They are necessary in order to get things done.

I talk a lot about them here on the blog as you may know.

But there may be something critical that you are missing on your to-do list.

Your TO-BE list.

It’s easy to get so caught up in your to-do list that you often forget

what the point of this whole thing is.

The biggest mistake people make with their to-do list is not including a to-be list.

You will never end up WHERE you want to be if you first don’t become WHO you need to be.

What is the point if you get everything done, accomplish all your material goals, rise to the top of the corporate ladder but lose yourself in the process?

What do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?” – Mark 8:36

Are the items on your to-do list leading you closer to the person you want to be or further away?

Take a minute to ask yourself what do you really want to be:

Who do you want to be?

Put these aspirations on your calendar just as you would a to do list.

Add actionable items to your to do list in order to achieve what you want to be.

You want to be a great husband – awesome how are you going to do that?

You might think about actually scheduling tasks to accomplish this.

  • Take wife out to dinner
  • Send flowers (Spontaneously)
  • Write a special note of appreciation
  • Cook a nice dinner or breakfast in bed

You want to be a great father

Things you could add to your to do list:

  • Schedule quality time with your kids.
  • Take time to help them study, play games, talk to them, or just be there.
  • Tell them how proud of them you are.
  • Write letters to leave in their lunch box and around the house for them to find.

You want to be in better shape

Things you could add to your to do list:

  • Schedule time for exercise
  • Write down a daily meal plan in advance
  • Grocery shop for healthy items and prepare meals the night before

Are you getting the point?

Your to do list and your to be list should go hand in hand.

It isn’t enough to have good intentions about what you want to be.

Everybody does that.

Every wants to be in shape, but few are.

What’s the difference?

To Be List

You must put action to the things you want to be. That’s the secret ingredient.

No it’s not easy, but neither is living a life of regret – wondering what you could have been – wishing things were different.

Suffer the pain of discipline now or suffer the pain of regret later – your choice.

“It’s never to late to be who you might have been.”  – George Ellitot

Do It Now:

Next time you write out your to-do list make sure you also think about your to-be list.

Start scheduling actionable items that bring you closer to who and what you want to be.

Try this for 30 days and see how much closer you are to becoming that person you always wanted to be.

What have you got to lose – Nothing

what have you got to gain – Everything
