What’s the first thing you think of when you hear this phrase “Find Your Happy Place?” Usually it’s referring to someone in a situation where they need to escape reality temporarily to cope.

Dumb & Dumber Happy Place

Well whether you just want to have a nice daydream or you really are going through a situation where it is too much to bear – finding your happy place might just be the right answer. The key here is really just to shift your thinking and focus.

“If you win in your mind – then you win in life.”

Getting the right perspective by “finding your happy place” just might help you get out of your “unhappy place”.

  • Where do you feel comfortable?
  • What do you enjoy doing with your time?
  • What makes you happy?

9 Ways To Find Your Happy Place

1. Reminisce Good Memories

Do you have a certain memory that makes you smile every time you think of it? Maybe it’s a childhood memory of Christmas? Maybe it’s when you fell in love – the birth of your child, that feeling of holding them in your arms for the first time. Maybe its something funny – that time uncle Uncle Willy thought he could do a flip on the trampoline

2. Set A New Goal

Fixing your mind on a new goal can be exciting. What is something that inspires you? What is something you’ve always wanted to achieve? It’s never too late. Here’s something to think about…”You’ll never have more time than you do right now” – In 5 years will you say, “I’m glad I did or I wish I wouda?”

3. Travel Somewhere New For A Fresh Perspective

Sometimes you just need some new scenery. Take a weekend getaway. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Maybe you just need a staycation. Go spend the weekend in a hotel nearby. Go for a scenic drive. Go fishing…camping…hiking. Whatever your cup of tea – just getting out of your daily routine can do you some good.

4. Count Your Blessings

There is Always Something To Be Thankful For

Anytime I start to get in that “unhappy place” this one always snaps me back. Somebody else out there always has it worse than you. I was recently complaining about a leak in my basement until I saw what all those poor people where going through in Oklahoma due to the recent tornadoes. People lost their entire homes and now suddenly I’m thankful that all I have is that leak in my basement.

5. Take a risk

Maybe it’s time to act on that idea you’ve been kicking around. Doing something risky can be exhilarating and makes you feel alive. Don’t be stupid risky though. I’m not talking about risking all your savings in the stock market or anything. I mean maybe you always wanted to teach a class or go back to school or find another job. What has been holding you back? Fear? We have all have fear. Get over it. Face it. Do something. Take a risk.

6. Go To Your Happy Place Literally dog happy place

Ok so maybe you have a favorite vacation spot? Are you a beach person, a snow person, a lake person? Maybe you just need to take yourself the kids to disney world – the happiest place on earth! Wherever your favorite happiest spot – maybe it’s time you revisit.

7. Immerse Yourself In A Good Book Or Movie

I’ve never been able to concentrate long enough to get into a good novel, but people swear by it. I’m more of a movie person but whatever works for you. This can certainly transport you to another world where you can take a break from reality for awhile.

8. Look At Pictures of Other People’s Happy Place

Take a look at  59 Of The Most Soothing Pictures You Will Ever See. These can either be incredibly soothing or incredibly torturous depending on how you look at it. I’ve worked in offices where some people tacked up pictures of the ocean and beaches all over their cubicle. Hey, whatever works.

9. Exercise

For some there is no better place than the gym. For others it is a torture chamber. Either way we all know that exercise produces those feel good endorphins so why not download your new favorite song and get lost in some good ole fashion exercise. It just might be your new happy place.

Courtney, you should never make someone else your “happy place”. If that person leaves for whatever reason, you would be devastated. Besides, it is an unfair burden to place on someone else. You must have had many happy moments in your life. Moments when you just forgot yourself and became absorbed in what was happening. If you cant think of a place, think of a happy moment. It may take some effort to do, because since you are depressed, your mind wants to think of sad things. Don’t let your mind control you; you take control, even if only for a short while. Find a happy moment to remember. It may be what changes the tide for you. It is definitely worth it. Wishing you all the best.

My happy place is closing my eyes and imagining that I’m 5 and sitting in my parents living room watching a disney movie, favorite show, or playing old games. Imagining childhood makes me feel all the stress lift from me because of everything being so care free back then!
