Take a minute to look around and see what you are attracting in your life.

Do you like what you see?

Are you attracting the things you want?

If the answer is no, maybe its time to take a look at who you really are.

And I’m not talking about good intentions here.

The best of intentions count for nothing if not put into action.

You know the phrases:

 “You reap what you sow”.

“What goes around comes around”

“Karma” 

I know these are very cliché

but there is some honest truth to this stuff.

  • You plant corn – you reap corn
  • You plant an apple seed – you reap an apple
  • You plant destructive thoughts – you reap…#$*!

There are some natural laws at work here and these laws are also at work in our minds.

Lets take an honest look at how closely our thoughts are linked to our circumstances:

1. Your Character and Who You Become

Here’s a scary thought (pun intended)

“A particular train of thought persisted in, be it good or bad, cannot fail to produce its results on the charachter and circumstances.”

2. Your Circumstances

How can you expect to sow thoughts of anger and hatred and expect to reap peace and harmony?How can you expect to sow thoughts of jealousy, and selfishness and reap thankfulness and joy? You can’t.

 ” A man cannot directly choose his circumstances, but he can choose his thoughts, and so indirectly, yet surely, shape his circumstances.”

3. Your Health & Body

Bestial thoughts = habits of drunkenness & sensuality.

Drunkenness & sensuality = circumstances of destitution and disease.

4. Your Purpose

Do you think that prison inmate landed on death row by thinking about things that were pure, lovely, positive, and uplifting – Uhh I doubt it.

Achievement does not happen by accident and rarely does it happen quickly. It is the result of putting one brick on top of another, one step at a time, day after day.

6. Your Goals

Chances are if you have goals – then at some point in time you “thought” about what you wanted. It starts with a simple thought and then another to put a plan into action and then another to stay focused on it and so on…

So How Do I Control My Thoughts?

1. Start by taking an inventory of your thought life.

The first step to changing your unproductive and destructive thoughts is to first acknowledge them. Do not let your mind aimlessly wander around. Chances are if left alone – it will wonder into places where it shouldn’t be going. Sadly that is just our nature.

2. It takes discipline.

Once you acknowledge the thoughts that need to change it is going to take discipline to redirect them. This takes work and it is not easy.For a while you may feel like you are constantly correcting yourself.

When I first started taking control of my thoughts I was amazed at what a little brat my mind was. It was like trying to control a 3-year-old who just downed a 20oz. Mountain Dew. My thoughts were all over the place with no direction or discipline. I’ll tell you though – it gets easier. Once you make a habit of playing goaltender with your thoughts you will start deflecting the negative with more and more success. 

After a while you will learn to stay focused only on those thoughts that bring you closer to the person you want to be and the life you want to have. This is how you truly take control of your circumstances and ultimately your destiny.

    Reading the part about discipline made me think about a quote from zig ziglar: “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great”

    To me, discipline isn’t about waking up at 6 am every morning and jumping right into gear for months on end without faltering. I think the image some people have of discipline is what’s causing them to disqualify themselves from even starting. Discipline to me isn’t about being perfect or “great”, its about having the willingness to constantly remind myself what I want, and then take action to reach it. Staying focused on what I want, and doing *my* best each day, while allowing momentum to slowly gain strength, is what I personally like to do to redirect and reinforce my thoughts.

      This mindset is definitely not just natural. It takes hard work and discipline. Let’s just say I have learned this the hard way. There was a time when I never challenged the quality of my thoughts and where they might be taking me. This was a big mistake and also a huge wake up call. The battle really is won or lost right between our ears. Our tomorrow’s will be the result of the thoughts we think today. Someday I may go into more of my personal story, but I can say with certainty that the quality of life largely depends upon how well we direct our thoughts.
