Don’t Fall Victim To “Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda.”

Don't Complain

Don't Complain

The story is told about a dog who was sitting on his master’s porch one day. The dog was moaning and groaning, and occasionally, he broke out into a loud whine. All the while the dog’s owner quietly rocked nearby, seemingly unconcerned. A man walking by the house asked why the dog was acting that way.

Lazy dog-framed

The dog’s owner said, “Because he’s lying on a nail.” The man asked, “Well, why doesn’t he get off it?” The owner said, “Because it’s not hurting bad enough.”

We’ve all encountered people who are like that dog. They moan and groan about their jobs, their circumstances, their situations, but they never seem to have enough energy to do something about any of it. They aren’t yet sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Each of us is born with the power to change our attitude, and very often, change the circumstances that we don’t like.

We do not have to be victims of the words…

  • “but”
  • “woulda”
  • “coulda”
  • “shoulda”

Authors John Roger and Peter McWilliams were wise when they wrote:

“But’ is a crutch; it is an excuse for procrastinators…It allows us to validate our inaction. When hard times hit…look for reasons to move forward, not for reasons to idle through life.”

Questions to ask yourself:

What is the nail in your life?

What will it take before it “hurts bad enough” to take action?

What are you making excuses about?

What are you complaining about that you are permitting?

What is the worst that could happen if you take action?

What is the worst that could happen if you DON’T take action?

  • Hey Joe! Awesome post! I know so many “victims” to those words! It’s all about confidence!

    • You’re welcome and thanks for the kind words! Confidence is huge no doubt. I have found that action breeds confidence. Taking the one next step you know to do and then celebrating each little success along the way- no mater how small.
